The Benefits Of Implementing Automated Storage And Retrieval Systems
Automated storage and retrieval systems (AS/RS systems) such as those used in pharmacy automation are designed and implemented for the automatic storage and retrieval of various parts and items that are used in retail, wholesale, distribution and manufacturing. The central idea is to bring the “goods to the man” rather than having to manually walk and search for the different stored items. There are several outstanding benefits that come with using these systems including increased accuracy and a reduction of inventory levels, space savings, and increased productivity along with a reduction of labor. Equipment that is used in AS/RS systems include a variety of automation systems and components, conveyors, and an SRM (storage and retrieval machine). These machines are capable of moving loads vertically and horizontally – as well as laterally to reach proper storing areas.
A good traditional example of this type of system would be the vending machine – although some would say that the logistic concept is missed in this kind of application, due to the process being completely centered around retail sales. There are two primary segments of AS/RS technologies – fixed aisle and carousels/vertical lift modules. Both of the aforementioned systems are utilized for automated storage and retrieval solutions, but use different concepts to achieve the end result. Smaller and medium-sized applications will generally employ carousels and vertical life modules, whereas a fixed aisle system caters more towards larger systems. Fixed aisle systems such as those available on cornerstoneautosys.com can either be single-masted, double masted, or man-aboard. They’re almost always supported by a track and are ceiling guided by guide rails or channels to keep the vertical alignment consistent. Even libraries use these kinds of technologies to retrieve books. In Japan automated storage and retrieval systems can be demonstrated when bicycles are retrieved from “bicycle trees” with the use of horizontal carousels.
